STORRS, Conn. – The UConn Huskies fell to Holy Cross in their home opener by a final of 2-0 Saturday evening. With the loss, UConn falls to 1-2-1 overall.
UConn and Holy Cross were locked in a defensive battle throughout the game. UConn came out aggressive looking to respond after the loss the previous night. Holy Cross was able to weather the initial Huskies attack and settle the game down. UConn outshot the Crusaders in the first period but were unable to find the back of the net. The UConn attack pressured Holy Cross, resulting in less puck possession and only six shots on goal.
In the second period, Holy Cross was able to find the back of the net, which proved to be enough to win the game. The goal came two minutes into the start of the second period, when sophomore Jake Percival turned the puck over in front of the UConn goal, and after one puck, Jack Ricketts of Holy Cross was able to net the goal, giving the Crusaders the lead. UConn continued to pressure, but strong defensive play and strong goaltending continued to blank the Huskies, as they entered the period break trailing by one.
In the final frame, UConn continued to attack looking for the equalizing goal. UConn had their third power play opportunity of the night in the third period but were unable to find the back of the net. The Huskies finished the evening 0-3 with the man advantage. Late in the period with the goalie pulled, Holy Cross was able to score on the empty net, sealing the win.
UConn will be back in action October 20 and 21 as they will travel to Union College for a two-game series in Schenectady, New York.
