Burlington, VT. – The UConn men's hockey team fell to the University of Vermont by a final of 4-1 Friday evening at Gutterson Field House. Senior Andrew Lucas was the lone goal scorer for the Huskies.
From the first puck drop, Vermont dominated the Huskies. Despite shots on goal being even, the Catamounts won puck battles, maintained puck possession, and finished scoring chances. Early in the period, Vermont jumped out to a 1-0 lead as sophomore goalie Arsenii Sergeev mishandled the puck, and a Vermont player was left alone in front to score. Vermont increased their lead midway through the period as the Huskies were unable to clear the zone, and after multiple passes, the Catamounts were able to beat Sergeev. With time running down in the period Vermont increased their lead to three when a Catamount exited the penalty box to find the loose puck and while on the breakaway fired a shot to beat Sergeev glove side.
The Huskies penalty kill was the lone bright spot, as they held Vermont scoreless on six attempts. After a scoreless second period, the Huskies looked to chip away in the final frame. Vermont ended the hope of a UConn comeback as they were able to increase their lead to four. The Catamounts won a faceoff draw cleanly and then fired a shot right past Sergeev. UConn was able to find the back of the net late in the period but would prove to be too late as the Huskies fell in game one of the two game series by a final of 4-1.
UConn will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday November 4 as they look to split the weekend series. Puck drop is scheduled for 6pm and can be streamed live on ESPN+.
