Huskies Win Thrilling Season Opener in Overtime

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's lacrosse team opened their season at home on Wednesday afternoon at Morrone Stadium against Fairfield University in an unseasonably warm day in Connecticut. The Huskies beat the Stags in an 18-17 overtime thriller.
The Huskies picked up their first win of the season defeating the Fairfield Stags for the third year in a row. UConn has now won 10 out of the last 11 contests against Fairfield University.
Senior Kate Shaffer shined in the home opening game at Morrone Stadium, beating her career high goals with seven on the day. She also notched two assists in the defeat of Fairfield. Graduate Student, Grace Coon scored five of her own goals to put the Huskies on top over the Stags.
On defense, graduate student and veteran goalkeeper, Landyn White, had 12 saves.
The game was won when sophomore, Rayea Davis, found the back of the net with 45 seconds left in the first period of overtime. It was her third goal of the day.
Senior Sophie Sorenson scored two goals, while junior, Susan Lafountain, had a goal of her own. Graduate Student, Lia LaPrise had two assists on the day, and senior, Madelyn George, notched one assist.
The Huskies will head to Sparks, MD as they take on JMU on Saturday, February 18th at 12:00pm at the US Lacrosse Facility.
