VENICE, Fla - The UConn baseball team was shut out, 3-0, against Ohio State on Opening Day at CoolToday Park.Â
Ian Cooke got the start on the mound for the Huskies and posted a quality start on the mound. The New Milford, Conn. native tossed six innings of three-run ball with eight strikeouts and just one walk.
Unfortunately, the UConn offense was only able to manage four hits and was shut out for the first time since the 2021 season.Â
Zach Fogell and Tommy Ellisen made solid debuts out of the bullpen with a each of them tossing a scoreless frame.Â
UConn threatened in the sixth inning after David Smith recorded the first hit of the night for the Huskies. After Smith reached second base on a wild pitch, Korey Morton launched a ball to deep left field that looked like it had a chance to get out of the park and give UConn a 2-1 lead. However, the ball died on the warning track and kept Ohio State ahead, 1-0.Â
The Huskies also threatened in the eighth inning with Jake Studley recording his first career hit as a Husky. Morton followed with a walk to walk to bring the tying run to the plate but the Huskies were unable to capitalize.
The series resumes tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Fla.
