Softball loses heartbreaker to no. 3 Florida but bounce back against Central Michigan

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The UConn softball team (3-4) fell to no. 3 Florida 4-3 on a walk off single on Saturday afternoon but bounced back in game two beating Central Michigan 3-2.

Hope Jenkins started in game one for the Huskies. She went four strong innings only giving up two runs with two strikeouts. Payton Kinney came in relief for Jenkins in the fifth inning and finished the game in the circle for the Huskies. She tallied three strikeouts and only gave up three hits.

UConn led for most of the game, opening the scoring in the second inning with two runs off two doubles. Lauren Benson doubled down the left field line to score Lexi Hastings from first base. Savannah Ring added another double down the right field line to score Benson.

The Huskies added to their lead in the fourth inning with a double by Grace Jenkins scoring Makenzie Mason making it 3-0. The Gators responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to trim the Huskies lead.

Florida went on to hit a walk off bloop single to right field in the bottom of the seventh to hand the Huskies their second loss of the weekend to the Gators.

Kinney started in game two picking up right where she left off in game one tossing three scoreless innings. Delaney Nagy came in relief for Kinney in the fourth inning. She went three innings only giving up two hits with a pair of strikeouts, earning her first win of the season.

Aziah James led the way for the Huskies at the dish with two hits, scoring two runs with three stolen bases. James scored the Huskies third run in the fifth inning with a savvy baserunning play to advance home on a throwing error by the Chippewas.

Central Michigan tallied two runs in the sixth inning to trim into the Huskies lead. Hope Jenkins came in to close out the win for the Huskies picking up her first save in a UConn uniform.

UConn will be back in action tomorrow morning as they close out the T-Mobile Tournament against Bowling Green at 9:00am.
