Softball opens the UNCG Invitational with a win as pitching shines

GREENSBORO, NC – The UConn softball team beat host school North Carolina Greensboro 3-1 Friday night in the first game of the UNCG Invitational. The pitching staff led the way for the Huskies putting in a dominant performance to shut down the Spartans lineup.
Hope Jenkins started in the circle for the Huskies tossing a career high six strikeouts over 4.2 innings of work. She gave up only two hits and one run. Payton Kinney came in relief in the fifth inning, picking up right where Jenkins left off retiring all seven batters she faced. Kinney was credited with the save (1) while Jenkins picked up her second win of the season.
UConn took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jana Sanden hit a three run homer down the left field line to put UConn in front. This is Sanden's first home run of the 2023 campaign.
UConn will be back in action tomorrow for the second day of the UNCG Invitational as they play Delaware at 1:30pm and UNCG again at 6:30pm.
