BERKELEY, Calif. – The UConn baseball team (3-2) completed an improbable 11-10 victory in 10 innings on Friday night at Evans Diamond.
The Huskies trailed 10-7 entering the ninth inning but rallied to tie the game at 10-10. T.C. Simmons led off the inning with a solo home run to right field. After a Jake Studley hit by pitch and Maddix Dalena pinch-hit single, Luke Broadhurst smoked an RBI double to the gap in left center to make it 10-9.
David Smith followed with an RBI ground out to even the score at 10-10.
RHP Devin Kirby remained in the game and pitched a scoreless ninth inning to push the game into extra innings.
In the 10th, the Huskies got back-to-back walks from Huber and Simmons with one away. After a great dirt ball read by Huber to advance to third with two outs, the UConn first baseman scored on a wild pitch to give UConn its first lead of the night.
Kirby came back out for the 10th and earned the victory with a 1-2-3 frame. Kirby finished the game with 2.2 innings of work with four strikeouts.
Grad student Luke Broadhurst recorded the first multi-homer game of the season with a pair of solo home runs. The Stafford Springs, Conn. native finished the night with three extra base hits with three runs scored and three runs batted in.
Ian Cooke got the start on the hill and threw 5.0 innings with a career-high nine strikeouts.
UConn will continue the Cal Baseball Classic tomorrow at 5 p.m. ET with a matchup against the Cal Bears. RHP Jack Sullivan is scheduled to take the hill for the Huskies.
