UConn Takes Down No.15 Yale in OT Stunner

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn Women's Lacrosse team took down No.15 nationally-ranked Yale University in an overtime stunner on Saturday afternoon at Morrone Stadium. The game was won on a free position goal for senior, Kate Shaffer, making the final score 11-10 on a cold, cloudy day in Storrs, CT.
The game started with heavy offensive pressure from both sides. UConn goalkeeper, Landyn White, had five big stops to start the first quarter, while Yale keeper, Clare Boone had two saves. Yale took the lead after calling a timeout, with 5:41 on the clock; the goal was scored by Jenna Collignon. UConn quickly answered that goal with two of their own; Sophie Sorenson scoring at 3:54 to even the game 1-1 and Grace Coon scoring at 3:00, assisted by Rayea Davis, to put UConn on top 2-1. With 1:27 to go, Collignon had her second unassisted goal of the game to even the score.
The Huskies came out hot in the second quarter, with junior Susan Lafountain putting one in the back of the net 32 seconds in. Yale sophomore, Fallon Vaughn, quickly followed up with a goal of her own, evening the score once again. Lia LaPrise put her first one in on the day at 11:36 with an assist from Coon. Huskies went back on top over the Bulldogs, 4-3. The UConn defense came up with a big stop late in the second quarter, forcing a shot clock violation for Yale's offense. Bulldog attacker, Bri Carrasquillo, tied the game up at 4-4 going into the half.
Contrary to the second quarter start, the Bulldogs came out hot in the third with a goal from Collignon at 14:21, assisted by Olivia Penoyer. Davis answered the Bulldogs goal with a rocket of her own at 11:58, assisted by Kate Shaffer. Yale went back up on top over UConn at 8:18 with an unassisted goal from Caroline Burt. The Huskies, once again, tied the game up at 2:09 when Maddy George found the back of the net after a shot from Lafountain hit the post. After a goal from Yale with 17 seconds left, Grace Coon scored on a free position with one second left in the third quarter to make it 7-7 going into the final quarter of the game.
Yale put up three goals early into the fourth quarter to take a lead over UConn, 10-7, making it the largest lead of the day for either team. Shaffer answered those goals with back-to-back goals of her own, cutting the Bulldogs' lead to one. Lafountain found the back of the net to tie the game up once again with 6:03 left in the game. With less than 5:00 to go, White came up with a massive stop to keep the score even. It was a scoreless last five minutes of the game, forcing overtime.
Overtime was won by UConn on a free position shot for Kate Shaffer, giving her a hat trick. It was a thriller of an ending. UConn dominated the field in draw controls today, taking 16 to Yale's 8. White kept the Huskies in the game with a stellar performance in goal, stopping 14 shots.
The Huskies will head to Ithaca, NY to take on another Ivy League opponent, Cornell University, on March 18th at 1:00pm.
