ITHACA, N.Y. – The UConn Women's Lacrosse team was edged out by Cornell University on Saturday afternoon in a back-and-forth contest up in Ithaca, NY, 16-13. While the Huskies won draw controls, 18-15, ultimately it wasn't enough to give them the edge over the Big Red.
Cornell came out hot to start the game, with a goal by Kylie Gelabert just 25 seconds into the first quarter. The lead didn't last long for the Big Red, when Lia LaPrise put one into the back of the net at 13:34 to even the score. Grad student, goalkeeper, Landyn White came up with a few big stops early to keep the score tied. Starting at 7:17 left on the clock in the first quarter, the Big Red went on a scoring spree, notching four goals to put them ahead of UConn, 5-1. Grad student, Grace Coon, cut the lead to three to end the first quarter, UConn 2 – Cornell 5.
Contrary to the first quarter start, UConn came out with gusto in the second quarter, with Grace Coon notching a quick hat trick on the day and then scoring a fourth goal to make it UConn 5 – Cornell 6. Sophie Sorensen quickly tied the game up at 6 goals apiece. With a goal from Katie Castiello at 4:28 and another goal at the end of the half, UConn went into halftime down 6-8 to the Big Red.
After the break, Susan Lafountain put a quick goal into the back of the net, followed up by a capitalized free position shot for Kate Shaffer, their first goals on the day, to even the score. Cornell countered that with a goal of their own to regain the lead once again. A beautiful shot from Lia LaPrise, assisted by Rayea Davis tied the game back up, before Cornell scored another of their own to take the lead. Back-to-back goals for LaPrise and Sorenson gave the Huskies their first lead of the day to end the third quarter, UConn 11 – Cornell 10.
Caitlin Slaminko, of Cornell, scored back-to-back goals at 13:59 and 12:19 to give Cornell the lead, making that her fourth goal of the day. With less than 6:00 minutes on the clock, Sorenson tied the game back up, however, that was quickly answered by Josie Vogel for another Cornell lead. Cornell went up two goals when Amanda Cramer put one into the back of the net with 4:26 to go. A final two goals for Cornell with less than 2:00 minutes on the clock solidified a Big Red win, even with a late goal from Morgan Carter to make the final score UConn 13 – 16 Cornell.
UConn will host University at Albany on Wednesday, March 22nd at Morrone Stadium. Opening draw is set for 2:00pm in their One Love themed game.
