Softball kicks off Providence series with a win

PROVIDENCE, RI – The UConn softball team beat the Providence Friars 6-1 on Friday afternoon at Glay Field. The Huskies tied their season high with seven stolen bases in the game, four coming from sophomore outfielder Lexi Hastings.

Payton Kinney started in the circle for the Huskies pitching a stellar six innings, striking out eleven hitters. Meghan O'Neil came in relief for Kinney in the seventh inning to close out the win for the Huskies.

UConn opened the scoring in the third inning scoring two runs, with clutch two out hitting. Savannah Ring drove in her ninth run of the season with a single to left field scoring Aziah James. Makenzie Mason followed Ring with a double, scoring Grace Jenkins making it 2-0 Huskies.

UConn added two more runs in the fourth inning extending the lead. Hastings drove in her fourth run of the season with a single to left field to score Rosie Garcia. Hastings would later come around to score on a ground out from Grace Jenkins.

Providence scored their first and only run of the game in the fourth inning on a throwing error by the Huskies catcher trying to catch the lead runner stealing third. The throw got by the third baseman and went down the left field line allowing the runner to advance home.

James put the game out of reach for the Friars in the seventh inning with a single up the middle bringing in two runs, adding to her season total of eight runs batted in.

UConn will look to win the series tomorrow as they close out the weekend with a doubleheader against the Friars starting at noon.
