Softball picks up second straight series win at Providence

PROVIDENCE, RI – The UConn softball team split the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Glay Field in Providence. The Huskies fell in game one, 3-2 but bounced back in game two defeating the Friars, 11-3. Sophomore outfielder, Lexi Hastings led the Huskies with five runs batted in and four runs scored in the doubleheader.
Meghan O'Neil started in game one going 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. Payton Kinney came in relief for O'Neil, finishing out the game in the circle for the Huskies.
Providence scored the game's first run in the fourth inning. UConn responded quickly with two runs in the fifth inning giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead. Aziah James hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring both Kaitlyn Kibling from third and Lexi Hastings from second. Hastings came around to score on a throwing error by the left fielder.
Providence regained the lead for good in the sixth inning with a two run double making it 3-2.
Hope Jenkins started in game two for the Huskies going a strong six innings striking out six. Delaney Nagy came in relief for Jenkins making her sixth appearance of the season to close out the win for the Huskies.
UConn's bats were hot in game two scoring early and often. In the first inning, Jana Sanden singled up the middle to score Hastings making it 1-0. Sanden doubled the Huskies lead in the third inning with a sacrifice fly to score James.
Providence tied the game at two in the bottom half of the third with back to back solo home runs.
Hastings gave the Huskies the lead for good in the third inning with a three run home run, her first of the season, giving UConn a 5-2 lead.
In the final two innings the Huskies offense was firing on all cylinders, scoring six runs, sending sixteen batters to the plate in the sixth and seventh innings. Hastings once again delivered with a double to left center scoring two more runs. Grace Jenkins would follow Hastings with a single to score two more making it 9-2 Huskies. James scored her fourth RBI of the weekend with a single scoring Taylor Zatyk. Grace Jenkins followed James driving in her second run of the game with a sacrifice fly scoring Haley Coupal.
UConn moves to 14-8 on the season and 4-2 in BIG EAST play. The Huskies will be back in Storrs for a four game homestand this week starting with Boston College on Tuesday at 4:00pm.
