STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team took the doubleheader sweep from Georgetown on Friday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The Huskies took game one, 5-3, and came back from a four run deficit in game two, winning on a walk off hit by freshman catcher Grace Jenkins.
Payton Kinney started in game one for the Huskies. She went five innings with seven strikeouts. Meghan O'Neil came in relief for Kinney to close out the win, earning her first save of the season.
Georgetown opened the scoring with two runs off an inside the park home run in the top half of the first inning. The Huskies responded right away in the bottom half scoring two runs off the bat of Grace Jenkins who hit a single to left field bringing in Lexi Hastings and Aziah James.
UConn extended their lead in the very next inning, this time it was Hastings. The sophomore outfielder hit a three run home run, her second of the season, giving the Huskies the lead for good.
The Hoyas scored a run in the third inning to trim into the lead, but the Huskies pitching shut the door, pitching four scoreless innings.
Hope Jenkins started in game two for the Huskies going six innings with a strikeout. After a tough second inning, Jenkins shut down the Hoyas lineup keeping them scoreless for the next four innings, and only surrendering two hits.
UConn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off the bat of Rosie Garcia. She hit a double into the right center field gap to score James. The Hoyas would respond in the second inning with five runs, with four coming off a grand slam.
The Huskies chipped away at the Hoyas lead in the third inning with a run off the bat of Jana Sanden. She hit her seventh double of the season, scoring Hastings, making it 5-2.
UConn tied the game in the fourth inning. Taylor Zatyk kicked off the inning with a one out single. Zatyk would later come around to score in the inning making it 5-3. Rosie Garcia delivered the game tying hit with a single left field, scoring Hastings and James.
O'Neil came in relief for Jenkins in the seventh inning. The Hoyas re-took the lead with a double making it 6-5 heading to the bottom of the seventh.
James started the inning with a walk, getting the tying run on base. Garcia, the very next hitter, was hit by a pitch, passing the baton to Sanden who would deliver a double that nearly ended it, hitting off the top of the right field wall and scoring James from second. This set the stage for Grace Jenkins with runners on second and third with no outs.
