MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The No.24 UConn Women's lacrosse team's comeback attempt fell short on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee, WI versus Marquette University. The Huskies scored five goals in a row and kept the Golden Eagles scoreless for the last 25 minutes, but it wasn't enough to put UConn on top.
The game opened with a spin move from Lia LaPrise, resulting in a goal that was assisted by Rayea Davis. UConn wouldn't score again during the first quarter after Marquette went on a scoring spree, notching seven straight goals in the next thirteen minutes; including capitalizing on a rebound off the post for freshman, Tess Osburn, and a free position shot.
The Golden Eagles continued their scoring run into the second quarter with another goal from Osburn at 13:24 on the clock. LaPrise found the back of the net for the Huskies to snap Marquette's scoring streak at 11:10. Both teams would go back-and-forth scoring goals for the remainder of the first half, with a Golden Eagle goal at 8:04 from Lydia Foust, a Huskies goal from Grace Coon at 6:02 and another Marquette goal from Meg Bireley at 4:23. The score going into halftime was UConn 3, Marquette 10.
Marquette opened the second half with a goal scored by Foust at 13:14, her second of the game. At 12:25 ,Sophie Sorenson passed the ball to Davis, who had a quick assist to Morgan Carter for her first goal of the game. Marquette followed up with a goal at 10:30, before Lauren Barry went back-to-back at 4:58 and 2:17 to end the quarter.
UConn opened the final quarter of the game on a comeback mission with another assist from Davis on a goal by Carter. Marquette had been left scoreless since their goal at 10:30. LaPrise put another one into the back of the net at 6:43 left to go in the game for a hat trick on the day, to extend UConn's scoring spree and Marquette's scoring drought. Davis had her first goal of the game after assisting on five prior goals. The five-goal comeback attempt wasn't enough for the Huskies in the end and they lost to Marquette, 12-9.
The Huskies return home on Wednesday afternoon at 2pm versus BIG EAST foe, Georgetown, for their annual Pride Game.
