STORRS, Conn. – The UConn Women's Lacrosse team defeated the Georgetown Hoyas at home on Wednesday afternoon in a much-needed conference win. Both teams were 1-2 in the BIG EAST coming into the game today; UConn coming off a loss at Marquette and Georgetown losing to Villanova at home last weekend.
Georgetown dominated across the board, leading UConn in shots, ground balls and draw controls. The Hoyas took the first three draw controls of the game; however, the Huskies scored the first four goals, with senior, Kate Shaffer, and grad student, Grace Coon, notching two apiece. Georgetown's Erin Bakes and Kylie Hazen each scored for the Hoyas to end the first quarter.
Two UConn goals got the Huskies started in the second quarter from Morgan Carter at 14:17 and Rayea Davis at 8:26. The Hoyas and the Huskies went back-and-forth to close out the first half with goals from Bakes and Hazen for Georgetown, and two more goals from Shaffer for UConn.
Davis opened scoring in the second half with a free position goal within the first minute. The Hoyas then went on a three-goal run to cut the lead before Coon notched her third of the game to end the quarter on top.
Shaffer and Davis notched two more goals each in the final quarter of the game. Shaffer ended the day with six goals, while Davis and Coon each had three. Carter rounded out the scoring offense for the Huskies in the win over the Hoyas.
Grad student goalkeeper, Landyn White, came up big in net for the Huskies today. White had 19 saves, closing in on her personal record for a single game, and scooped up one ground ball. The rest of the defense followed suit, with Julia Ozimek and Gillian Haverty each causing two turnovers. Attacker, Lia LaPrise, played a robust defense today with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Ariana Kline and Rylee Brown each came up with three draw controls, while Madelyn George and Ozimek had two apiece.
