#6 UConn Advances to Big East Quarterfinals with Win Over #11 Seton Hall

CAYCE, S.C. – The University of Connecticut women's tennis team took down No. 11 seed Seton Hall 4-0 in the first round of the Big East Tournament on Thursday.
The No. 6 seed Huskies went on to shut out the Seton Hall Pirates to start out the tournament with a strong start in doubles. UConn earned the doubles point at third and second doubles. Third doubles pair, Maria Constantinou and Doga Selen Takunyaci put up a 6-3 score. Second doubles pair, Olivia Wright and Cameron Didion also ended with a 6-3 win.
Then, in singles play UConn would continue playing at the same level it finished at in doubles. All three singles wins came in straight sets from Didion, Caroline Cook, and Constantinou. Didion put up a confident win at fourth singles with a 6-0, 6-2 score. Caroline Cook also would find success winning 6-2, 6-1 at the six singles spot. Constantinou rounded out the day at first singles, adding the point to clinch the match with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
"Any time you get a win in the conference tournament, it is a great day," Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall said. "Seton Hall was tough today and gave us very close matches in 3-4 singles positions. Fortunately, we were playing well and came through with enough wins to secure the victory. Maria clinched the win for us with a close two-set win at number 1 [singles]. This was her second match winning clinch in a row, as she did it last week against UMass as well. I'm very proud of the team's effort and focus today. We played tough in the close moments on many courts today, and that made the difference."
The Huskies move on to the quarterfinals against No. 3 seed Creighton on Friday, April 21 at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center at 9 a.m. EST.
