OMAHA, Neb. – The UConn softball team (30-11) secured their seventh straight series win on Saturday afternoon, beating Creighton 10-5.
Payton Kinney got her 16th start in the circle, going three innings with three strikeouts.
UConn jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Just like yesterday, Lexi Hastings scored the game's first run. After working a leadoff walk, she stole second and third base putting her in position to score on a wild pitch. The Huskies scored their second run on a Creighton error, allowing Grace Jenkins to score from second base.
Creighton took the lead in the third inning, scoring four runs, making it 4-2.
UConn responded quickly, scoring two runs in the very next inning, tying the game at four. Lauren Benson hit her first career home run, a shot to left center, making it a one run ball game. Grace Jenkins tied the game with a single, scoring Hastings from third.
Delaney Nagy came in relief for Kinney in the fourth inning, earning her second win of the season. She went 2.1 innings with two strikeouts.
The Huskies regained the lead in the fifth inning as Benson delivered again, this time with a sacrifice fly, allowing Rosie Garcia to score. Aziah James added another run with an infield single, scoring Savannah Ring, making it 6-4 Huskies.
Creighton cut into the lead with a run in the bottom half of the fifth, but Nagy did well to limit the damage, stranding the tying and go ahead runners in scoring position.
Meghan O'Neil came in relief for Nagy in the sixth inning, with two runners on and only one out. O'Neil was able to get out of the inning unscathed with the lead intact. She finished out the game in the circle for the Huskies not allowing a hit, earning her eighth save of the season.
UConn broke the game open in the seventh inning scoring four runs on five hits. UConn loaded the bases with only one out, setting the stage for the big inning. The Huskies would get three straight hits, starting with James who drove in her second run of the game with a bloop single to left field, scoring Ring. Grace Jenkins followed James with a long single off the center field wall, scoring Hastings and Giuliana Abruscato. Jana Sanden joined the hit barrage with a double to right center, her ninth of the season, scoring James, and giving UConn a 10-5 lead.
The Huskies will look to complete their fourth straight series sweep tomorrow at 1:00pm.
