OMAHA, Neb. – The UConn softball team (31-11) completed their fourth straight BIG EAST series sweep against Creighton (18-27) on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies now move to 18-3 in conference play, sitting in first place with one conference series to go.
Hope Jenkins picked up her 13th win of the season, going four strong innings in the circle with a pair of strikeouts.
UConn's offense led the way scoring a run in each of the first five innings. Just like in the first two games of the series, UConn jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. After the first two hitters in the lineup in Lexi Hastings and Aziah James reached base safely, Jana Sanden brought both home with a single to left field, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
Hope Jenkins added to the lead with a solo home run in the second inning, the first home run of her career, making it 3-0 Huskies.
Jenkins only blemish of the day came in the second inning as Creighton's Cayla Nielsen tied the game with a three run home run.
UConn responded quickly, re-taking the lead for good in the third inning. Sanden drove in her third run of the game with a double down the left field line scoring Hastings, making it 4-3 Huskies.
The Huskies added two more runs in the fourth inning giving UConn some breathing room at 6-3. Hastings had herself a day at the plate as the sophomore outfielder set a career high with four hits, going 4-5 in the game. She drove in the first run of the inning, with a single, scoring Hope Jenkins.
UConn broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring four runs, and putting the game out of reach for Creighton. Hastings got it started with a single to center, driving in her second run of the game. James followed Hastings with another single, scoring Taylor Zatyk. Grace Jenkins followed James with a sacrifice fly, to score Hastings. Pinch hitter Haley Coupal was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing James to score.
Delaney Nagy made her tenth appearance of the season, coming in relief for Jenkins in the fifth inning. She went 1.1 innings with a strikeout.
Creighton cut into the lead in the sixth inning, with another three run home run by Nielsen, making it 10-6.
Meghan O'Neil came in relief for Nagy to close out the win for the Huskies. She finished with three strikeouts, only allowing one hit.
UConn will return to action next weekend as they travel to DePaul to close out the BIG EAST regular season slate.
