Softball opens five game home stand with win over Fairfield

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team beat the Fairfield Stags, 13-1 in a five inning run rule on Tuesday afternoon at Burrill Family Field, with five Huskies having multiple runs batted in.
Hope Jenkins got her 14th start of the season for the Huskies going four innings with five strikeouts, earning her ninth win of the season.
Fairfield scored the game's first run on a solo home run in the top of second inning. UConn responded right away with five runs in the bottom half of the inning, all coming with two outs. The Huskies loaded the bases for Aziah James who delivered a big a bases clearing double bringing in all three runs and shifting the momentum back into the Huskies favor. Grace Jenkins followed James with a double off the left center field wall bringing in James, making it 4-0 Huskies. UConn added another run off a Fairfield error bringing home Jenkins, and putting the Huskies ahead 5-1.
UConn put the game out of reach for the Stags in the fourth inning, scoring eight runs on eight hits. Jenkins started the big inning driving in two more runs giving her three on the game, her fifth multi-RBI game of the season. Jana Sanden followed Jenkins with a two run home run, her third homer in the last four games, making it 9-1 Huskies. Haley Coupal hit her third double of the season brining in two more runs. Kaitlyn Kibling followed Coupal with another double, driving in the first run of her career, and giving the Huskies a commanding 13-1 lead.
Delaney Nagy came in relief for Jenkins in the fifth inning to close out the win.
UConn will return to action tomorrow as they welcome UMASS to Burrill Family Field. First pitch is set for 6:00pm.
