Softball shuts out UMASS, winning fifth straight game

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team defeated the UMASS Minutewomen 5-0 on Wednesday evening at Burrill Family Field. The UConn pitching staff got their sixth shutout win of the season, improving the Huskies to 22-10 on the season.
Payton Kinney started in the circle for the Huskies going four innings, only surrendering one hit, with five strikeouts. Kinney started out strong retiring the first six batters of the game.
Aziah James and Grace Jenkins were responsible for all five of the Huskies runs. The two have combined to bring in eleven out the Huskies eighteen runs in the past two games.
UConn got on the board in the first inning as James hit the Huskies third triple of the season, setting up Grace Jenkins to bring her home with a groundout.
UConn added three runs in the third inning, with James bringing in two runs on a fielding error by UMASS. Jenkins scored James with a single up the middle making it 4-0 Huskies.
Meghan O'Neil came in relief for Kinney in the fifth inning, closing out the last three innings for the Huskies. She finished with six strikeouts, only giving up two hits.
Jenkins drove in her third run of the game in the fifth inning with a ground out to score Lexi Hastings, making it 5-0 Huskies.
UConn will return to conference play this weekend as they host the St. John's Red Storm for a three game series starting on Friday at 6:00pm. Tickets are available HERE.
