WATERBURY, Conn. – One current UConn golfer and one future UConn golfer are part of a four-way tie for the lead after the first round of the 20th Russell C. Palmer Cup at the Country Club of Waterbury.
Connor Goode (Glastonbury, Conn.), who just completed his freshman season at UConn and Bradley Sawka (Ellington, Conn.), who will join the Huskies in the fall as an incoming freshman, each shot a 2-under 67 Monday in the first round. In addition, UConn's Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.), who just completed his junior year, shot an even-par 69 and is in seventh place, two strokes back.
The final two rounds of the 54-hole event take place on Tuesday morning and Tuesday afternoon. Anthony Guerrera out of the Watertown Golf Club, and Ben Carpenter, out of the Country Club of Darien, were the other two golfers who were part of the lead after the first round.
Sawka came back from a double bogey on the second hole with a birdie on No. 4 to make the turn at 1-over, then played the back nine in a sizzling 3-under to notch his 67.
Goode had a three-putt bogey on the first hole, but posted birdies on No. 4, No. 5 and No. 9 to make the turn at 2-under and was even the rest of the way.
The Palmer Cup is largely regarded as the amateur stroke play championship of Connecticut. The starting field included 102 golfers. The top 39 players, plus ties, made the cut and will advance to Tuesday's final two rounds.
