STORRS, Conn. – Paul Caddy, UConn Field Hockey's head coach, announced the hiring of a new assistant coach, Maddie Hinch, on Thursday afternoon. Hinch will serve as a crucial member of the 2023 staff as they prepare for the start of their season.
A world-renown goalkeeper, Hinch is a decorated athlete as a two-time Olympic Medalist, leading her teams to gold in Rio (2016), where she famously saved all four penalties in the shoot-out against Holland, and bronze in Tokyo (2020); a two-time Commonwealth Games Medalist, capturing gold in Birmingham (2022) and silver in Glasgow (2014); and a two-time European Medalist, winning gold in London (2015) and silver in Belgium (2016). She claimed FIH Goalkeeper of the Year awards in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
Hinch joins UConn after retiring from playing internationally in England and Great Britain. She made her debut in 2008 and was later awarded a full-time contract with GB Hockey in 2010. She had established herself as the national team's first-choice goalkeeper and had gone on to represent England and Great Britain more than 150 times. She has also been a member of HC Tilburg, a club hockey team in Holland.
"We're bringing in the best goalkeeper of all time. She has played at the highest level and will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program. We're excited to get her on campus and kickoff the season," said Head Coach, Paul Caddy.
This hire is pending successful completion of the University onboarding process.
The Huskies head to Pennsylvania on August 25th to open their season against the Saint Joseph's University Hawks. The game is slated to start at 1pm EST.
