STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (1-0) utilized a pair of second half goals to capture a 2-0 victory in its season opener against Boston University on Sunday night at Morrone Stadium.
After out-shooting the Terriers, 8-2, in the first half, the Huskies continued to pressure the visitors. Junior Abbey Jones broke the stalemate in the 62nd minute with a perfectly placed shot from long distance that went past the outstretched handers of the BU keeper. It is the second-straight year that the Brit has scored in the Huskies season opener.Â
Sophomore Chioma Okafor picked up where she left off in 2022 with a goal in the 79th minute to help secure the win for UConn. Okafor finished her stellar freshman campaign with four goals in the final two matches of the year. Okafor led the Huskies with six total shots and three on goal on Sunday night.Â
UConn limited the Terriers to just two shots on goal and seven total to help goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mahoney secure her 10th career shutout. All four defenders; Kelly Monaco, Lucy Cappadona, Jackie Harnett and Laci Lewis logged 90 minutes in the shutout effort.Â
Opening night featured UConn debuts for transfers Kelly Monaco and Giovanna Dionicio while freshmen Anaya Johnson, Alayna Taylor and Lydia LeBlanc all played in their first career collegiate game.Â
The Huskies move to 1-0 and will hit the road next Sunday, August 27Â against 2022 NCAA Tournament participant Harvard. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+
