Cross Country Wins Suffolk Short Course Classic in Season Opener

BOSTON – The University of Connecticut women's cross country team finished first in the final team score to start out the 2023 season at the Suffolk Short Course Classic Friday afternoon.
The Huskies posted second, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh place times to total 24 points, taking first on the day. Northeastern placed second with a total team score of 39 points and WPI finished third with a total team score of 83 points.
Freshman Malin Rahm took second with the leading time for the Huskies running a blistering 10:48.6 result in the 3k race. Then, sophomore Chloe Trudel would take fourth with a time of 10:55.9. Junior Rachael Woodruff would also take fifth with a solid 10:59.7 time.
The men's cross country team also competed today in Boston on their limited competitive season to start out 2023. Junior Mahamed Sharif finished fifth, with the leading time for the Huskies running a 15:44.4 result in the 5k race.
"Today was a good day," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Beth Alford Sullivan said. "The women ran very competitively and took care of business. A great collegiate opener for Malin, a true freshman. Our middle distance core raced today and had great pride in doing so. Mahamed raced really well and showed solid early season fitness. We will regroup for next week at Providence College where we will race with full squads."
