Quick Hits...
UConn will get its first road test of the 2023 season when the Huskies travel to Atlanta for a first-ever match-up with the Georgia State Panthers on Saturday, September 9. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 pm and will be live on ESPN+.
The Huskies are on the road in search of their first win on the season after falling their opener to NC State, 24-14. UConn sophomore running back ran for 99 yards on nine carries and had both UConn touchdowns, scoring on runs of 18 and 71 yards. His 71-yard third quarter score was the longest run of Rosa's career. He led the Huskies in rushing and scoring last season with 11 touchdowns.Â
Senior Joe Fagnano made his UConn starting quarterback debut in the loss. Fagnano got the Husky offense to a fast start, engineering a 12-play, 75 yard scoring drive to open the game, hitting his first three passes along the way. Fagnano finished the game 14-of-26 for 113 yards with an interception. He was sacked twice but ran seven times for 18 yards. Fagnano targeted sophomore tight end Justin Joly six times, connecting for four completions. Grad student transfer wideouts Brett Buckman and Geordon Porter each caught a pair of passes in their UConn debuts.
Defensively, senior linebacker Jackson Mitchell finished with 15 total tackles, 1.5 for a loss. Mitchell, who was seventh in the NCAA in tackles per gam last season (10.8), is climbing up the UConn record book for career tackles. The senior now has 340 stops over four season, moving him up to ninth on the all-time list. Paul Duckworth (1990-93) is next in his sights, sitting in eighth at 344. Junior safety Durante Jones had a big night as well, matching his career-high with 14 tackles, 10 solo.
