Both teams come into Wednesday's match-up playing strong basketball, with UConn on a five-game winning streak and Creighton riding a four-game streak. The Huskies have struggled in the all-time series with the Bluejays, holding a 1-6 record against one of their newest conference rivals. UConn got its first win in the series last year at Gampel Pavilion, part of a regular season split.
UConn won its most recent contest at home against Georgetown, knocking off the Hoyas 80-67 on Sunday at the XL Center. Alex Karaban (Southborough, Mass.) and Cam Spencer (Davidsonville, Md.) combined for 46 points in the win and hit a combined 11 shots from 3-point range. The Huskies held Georgetown to 34.0 percent shooting on the day and tied their season-high with 13 made 3-pointers.
The Huskies have been led this season by their high-powered offense, currently ranking in the top-15 in the nation in field goal percentage, scoring margin and assists per game. Spencer currently leads the Huskies in scoring with 15.8 points per game and is the top 3-point shooter in the BIG EAST at 46.8 percent, good for eighth nationally. He is followed closely in the scoring column by Karaban at 15.4 points per game and Tristen Newton (El Paso, Texas) who checks in at 14.8 per contest. Newton is also UConn's leader in rebounding (6.5 rpg) and assists (6.2 apg).
The Bluejays visit Storrs with a 13-4 record on the year and a 4-2 mark in BIG EAST play. Creighton most recently won a thriller at home against St. John's on Saturday by a score of 66-65. The Bluejays boast one of the most potent trios in the country. Baylor Scheierman leads a high-scoring CU offense with 18.0 points per game and also tops the squad with 8.3 rebounds per contest while leading the league in 3-pointers per game. Trey Alexander stuffs the stat sheet with 16.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game and Ryan Kalkbrenner averages 15.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game on 64.1 percent shooting.
Following Wednesday night's home tilt, the Huskies are back on the road to take on longtime rival Villanova in Philadelphia. Tip-off on Saturday, Jan. 20 is set for 8 p.m. from the Wells Fargo Center.
