WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 1 UConn men's basketball team (22-2, 12-1 BIG EAST) stayed rolling, winning its 12th-straight over Georgetown (8-15, 1-11 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Arena. Alex Karaban (Southborough, Mass.) led four Huskies in double-figures with 25 points in the 89-64 win – marking the largest margin of victory for UConn against Georgetown in series history.
The Huskies shot over 60 percent from the floor for the first time this season and dished out 26 assists in the impressive offensive display. Stephon Castle (Covington, Ga.) had 17 points while Samson Johnson (Lome, Togo) and Cam Spencer (Davidsonville, Md.) both finished with 10. UConn's 12-game conference winning streak is the longest since Villanova matched the mark in the 2014-15 season.
UConn led by as many as 26 in the first half, slowing down in the second but still doing enough to secure the big win. Tristen Newton (El Paso, Texas) stuffed the stat sheet with six points, six rebounds and a game-high nine assists while Donovan Clingan (Bristol, Conn.) had four points, five rebounds, a career-high six assists and a season-high four blocks.
How it Happened
The Huskies opened fast, splashing a pair of 3-pointers to jump out to an 8-2 lead. Later in the first half Connecticut used a 9-0 spurt to take its largest lead at 19-6 and force a GU timeout with 13:50 on the clock.
A Karaban 3-pointer and Castle flush capped an 11-0 run midway through the half, giving Connecticut a 30-12 lead and forcing two more Hoya timeouts along the way. The Huskies ballooned their lead to as many as 26 in the first half and took a 52-28 lead to the break.
UConn's offense cooled off in the second half after its hot start, but the big early lead provided plenty of cushion. With five minutes to play Solomon Ball (Leesburg, Va.) and Karaban canned back-to-back 3-pointers, pushing the lead to its largest of the day at 27. UConn would close the game making nine of its last 10 from the floor to secure the 25-point win.
