CLEMSON, S.C. – UConn softball (4-7) heads to Clemson this weekend to compete in the Clemson Classic, featuring matchups with Ole Miss, Miami (OH), and the host no. 9 Clemson.
Sophomore catcher Grace Jenkins has been the Huskies hottest hitter so far in the early season, reaching base safely in all eleven games. She leads the Huskies in batting average (.452), hits (14), doubles (5), slugging percentage (.710), and on base percentage (.538). Her five doubles rank 10th in the entire country. She has been named to the BIG EAST honor roll in back to back weeks to begin her sophomore campaign.
Senior infielder Jana Sanden has found her home run swing, hitting three homers last weekend at NC State. Sanden had six long balls a season ago. The Connecticut native leads the Huskies with eleven runs batted in and three multi-RBI games.
Junior outfielder Lexi Hastings has gotten off to a fast start on offense. So far, she has scored fourteen runs which ranks fourth in all of Division I. Her ten stolen bases rank second in the country. Hastings stole 40 bases just a season ago and is in great position to match or break her single season record. She is riding a three game hitting streak coming into the weekend.
Senior pitcher Hallie Siems has been the Huskies go to option in the circle this season leading the staff with five games started. In her seven appearances, Siems has a 3.00 era, with 25 strikeouts, holding opponents to a .210 batting average.
The Huskies will open the Clemson Classic on Friday with a doubleheader starting in the morning against the Ole Miss Rebels (9-1) at 11:00am. This is the third all-time matchup as UConn has never won against the SEC foe. The Huskies match up with the Miami RedHawks (7-0) at 1:30pm. UConn is 2-4 all-time against the RedHawks.
On Saturday, the Huskies will play no. 9 Clemson at 4:00pm. This will be the first ever meeting between the two programs. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
UConn will play on Sunday in either the third place game at 10:00am or the championship game at 12:30pm.
