Huskies’ Comeback Falls Short in Philly

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The No.25 UConn women's lacrosse team (0-3) fell short of a comeback against the Saint Joseph's Hawks on Friday afternoon in Philly. This was the second meeting between the teams, now at 1-1 all-time.
The Hawks were on the board first as Sarah Groark and Maddie Yoder each notched a goal in the first two minutes of play. It was a defensive battle as the game remained scoreless through the end of the first quarter. UConn outshot SJU 12-8, and goalkeeper, Landyn White, made three saves.
SJU started the second quarter scoring a goal in the first two minutes from Lisa Ross. Susan Lafountain had the first goal of the day for Huskies as she cut the deficit to two. The Hawks would go on to capitalize on a free position attempt to put their lead back up to three with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half. Less than a minute later, SJU's Ross scored again to make the game 5-1. UConn notched three in row in the next few minutes as they attempted a first half comeback. The first was a goal on a caused turnover from Riley Daly; Daly ran the ball up the field to assist on the goal from Kate Shaffer. Lauren Barry joined in as she notched her first goal of the season, and a free position goal from Kate Shaffer rounded out the Huskies' scoring. SJU would have a goal on a free position attempt with just under 11 seconds in the half to make the score 6-4 going into halftime.
The first three goals of the second half went to SJU as Fuhrman scored her first of the day and Yoder notched her second and third with two goals in a row. A free position attempt from Lafountain would add a goal to make it five for UConn on the day. Two goals in a row from Rayea Davis started the second half comeback for the Huskies as the third quarter ended.
The Huskies were first on the board in the final quarter with a goal from Jenna Giardina. Shaffer notched one into the back of the net for a hat trick on the day before the Hawks scored their final goal of the game. Another goal from Shaffer would round out the scoring for the Huskies as they fell short just one goal, outscoring SJU 5-1 in the last 18 minutes of play.
Daly had a strong performance on defense as she tallied three caused turnovers, three draw controls, and two ground balls. Shaffer had four goals and three draw controls. UConn outshot SJU 44-29 in the loss.
The Huskies continue to stay on the road for their fourth game as they head to New Hampshire on Wednesday, February 28th for an afternoon matchup against the Wildcats.
