Huskies Dominate Wildcats in Durham

DURHAM, N.H. – The UConn women's lacrosse team (1-3) dominated the New Hampshire Wildcats on the road in Durham in a 17-5 contest on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies are now 14-7 all-time against the Wildcats.
UConn grad student, Kate Shaffer, started the game off with a quick hat trick, scoring three goals in a row; the first on a free position shot. UNH snuck in their first goal in between Shaffer's second and third. The Wildcats cut the lead to one with a free position goal with less than five minutes to go in the first. Susan Lafountain and Abby Charron followed up with their first goals of the day, to put the Huskies up 5-2 to end the first quarter.
The second quarter was all UConn as the Huskies outscored the Wildcats, 6-0. Grad student goalkeeper, Landyn White, posted a second quarter shutout. Grad transfer, Eliza Bowman, had her first career goal as a Husky to start the second quarter off a pass from Charron. Rayea Davis notched two goals in the second quarter, whiel Shaffer, Morgan Carter, and Lauren Barry had one apiece as the game went into halftime, 11-2.
The Huskies scored another six goals in the second half; two from Carter, another from both Lafountain and Shaffer, one from Jenna Giardina, and one fromShea van den Broek as she notched her first career goal as a Husky on a free position shot. The Wildcats scored three more times in the second half to make the final score, 17-5.
Shaffer had a season-high five goals in the win; Carter notched her first hat trick of the season; both Davis and Lafountain continued their streak as they have now scored in all four games, along with Shaffer. White made nine saves on the day, while freshman goalkeeper, Sofia Oximana, made two saves in her first career game with the Huskies. Grad student midfielder, Madelyn George, had a season-high 11 draw controls and notched one assist. Defender, Riley Daly, had three draw controls and three ground balls in the win.
The Huskies will wrap up their five-game road stand with a trip to New Haven, Conn. to take on the No.21 Yale Bulldogs on Saturday, March 9th at 1:00pm.
