BERKELEY, Calif. – The UConn baseball team (2-4) rallied back from a pair of late deficits but were swept by the University of California on a walk-off single, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh, freshman Tyler Minick and sophomore Ryan Daniels each delivered RBI singles to give UConn its first lead of the day, 2-1.

After a walk to Caleb Shpur to load the bases with two outs, Jake Studley seemed to draw a bases loaded walk but the home plate umpire punched out Studley on the swing without an appeal to the first base umpire.

The Golden Bears immediately responded in the home half of the seventh with a three-run homer off the bat of Caleb Lomavita to take a 4-2 advantage.

The Huskies would not go away as junior catcher Matt Garbowski smoked a game-tying two-run homer to right to even the score at 3-3 in the eighth. It was the second home run of the weekend for the New Fairfield, Conn. native.

After a scoreless eighth inning from Braden Quinn, the Huskies had a great opportunity to reclaim the lead.

Paul Tammaro and Caleb Shpur registered one-out singles and a hit by pitch to Jake Studley loaded the bases. However, back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat and kept the game tied at four.

Cal capitalized on the opportunity by loading the bases with one out in their half of the ninth and centerfielder Rodney Green Jr. delivered a walk-off RBI single to help sweep the series.

UConn starting pitcher put together another strong start to begin the season by tossing six innings, allowing four hits, two runs and struck out four.

UConn will look to regroup and open a three-game series at Auburn beginning next Friday, March 1.
