Huskies Pull Out Win Over Quinnipiac at Home

MANCHESTER, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team squeezed by Quinnipiac to win 4-3 at their home indoor courts at Magic Lincer Tennis Club Wednesday afternoon.
The Huskies are now 4-1 overall. UConn put up solid performances in doubles play to claim the doubles point after wins at the first and second doubles spot. Then, in singles play sophomore Cameron Didion would clinch the match after the Bobcats were storming back to take three of the six singles points.
"This was a good win over a tough Quinnipiac team," said head coach Glenn Marshall. "Anytime you can pull out a 4-3 win down the stretch, it's a good day. We started out clinching the doubles point with strong wins at 1 and 2 doubles. Both teams played well from the start, and they were very focused and confident throughout. Going into singles up 1-0 proved to be extremely important. Especially since we were without our #2 player Maria for singles due to an injury. Fortunately, we had multiple players step up and grab wins at number 2-4 singles. Olivia lost a close battle in two tight sets. But Cam clinched the match when it was tied 3-3 for the winning point. Overall I'm very pleased with the win today, as we came through with some very good personal performances to seal the victory."
Junior Olivia Wright teamed up with junior Maria Constantinou as they pulled out the first doubles win at first doubles going 6-2. Then, to get the doubles point right after the other, junior Isabel Petri Bere and freshman Caroline Hinshaw cruised to a 6-0 win.
In singles play, Petri Bere got the Huskies going, rolling to a 6-3, 6-0 victory at second singles. Then, at third singles Hinshaw also won in straight sets taking an even 6-3, 6-3 win. Then, UConn felt the pressure as Quinnipiac rattled off wins at the first, fifth, and sixth spot. It soon came down to Didion who held composure to win in straight sets going 6-4, 6-4.
