LOS ANGELES - The UConn baseball team (4-9) earned a 5-2 win at UCLA (5-10) on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
In the Huskies first midweek game of the season, five UConn pitchers held the Bruins to just three hits on the night.Â
LHP Joe Cinnella made his first start as a Husky and fired two scoreless innings that featured a pair of punch outs.Â
After walking in a run in the bottom of the third, the Huskies responded in the fourth with a two-out RBI double from Korey Morton to even the score, 1-1.
UConn took its first lead in the sixth after back-to-back walks to Ryan Daniels and Paul Tammaro to begin the frame. First baseman Luke Broadhurst broke the tie with his first home run of the season, a three-run shot, to give the Huskies a 4-1 advantage.Â
The Huskies didn't stop there, mounting a two-out rally with a walk to Matt Malcom and single off the bat of Matt Garbowski. Bryan Padila followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-1.Â
LHP Garrett Coe (1-1) earned the victory out of the bullpen by tossing 2.1 shutout frames.
Joe Carrea followed with one inning out of the pen and passed the ball to LHP Braden Quinn in the seventh.
Quinn was superb, earning his second career save with three shutout innings. The New Fairfield, Conn. native escaped a bases loaded jam in the seventh and then retired the final six batters he faced. Quinn finished the game with a career-high seven strikeouts and did not allow a hit in his effort.Â
The win snapped a four-game slide for the Huskies and gives them some momentum heading into a matchup with No. 22 UC Irvine on Wednesday, March 13 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
