Softball splits doubleheader against Providence

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team split the opening two games of the Providence series on Saturday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The Huskies took game one on a walk off walk, 4-3. UConn fell in extra innings, 3-2 in game two.
Game One:
Payton Kinney earned her tenth start of the season for the Huskies. She went 4.2 innings, giving up only one run on five hits with three strikeouts.
Providence jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
UConn tied the game at one in the fourth inning as freshman Rayah Snyder scored from third base on a pass ball.
Hope Jenkins came on in relief for Kinney in the fifth inning, getting the Huskies out of a jam, stranding two runners in scoring position. Jenkins went on to pitch 1.0 inning giving up two runs on one hit.
Providence regained the lead in the sixth inning, scoring two runs to make it 3-1 Friars.
Meghan O'Neil relieved Jenkins in the sixth inning making her 25th appearance of the year. O'Neil finished out the game in the circle, giving up only one hit, adding four strikeouts, picking up her fifth win of the season.
Rosie Garcia trimmed into the Friars lead in the sixth inning with a solo home run to right field, her eighth home run of the season to put the Huskies right back in it.
UConn's offense loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning for the top of the Huskies order. Garcia was hit by a pitch, scoring Lauren Benson from third base, and moving all runners up a base. Jana Sanden worked a walk to force in the game winning run, scoring Savannah Ring, and giving the Huskies the win in the series opener.
Game Two:
Hallie Siems made her 16th start of the season for the Huskies in game two. She went 6.0 innings giving up two runs on six hits, adding eight strikeouts.
Providence scored the game's first run in the third inning, taking a 1-0 lead.
UConn responded right away in the bottom half of the third inning off the bat of Hope Jenkins. The sophomore singled to right field, scoring Grace Jenkins from third base, making it 1-1.
Providence regained the lead in the fifth inning on a dropped third strike allowing the run to score from third, making it 2-1.
Meghan O'Neil came on in relief for Siems in the seventh inning. She finished out the game in the circle for the Huskies tossing 3.0 innings giving up one run on three hits with five strikeouts.
Hope Jenkins once again came through for the Huskies in the bottom of the seventh inning, notching her third hit of the game with a double to right center field, scoring Grace Jenkins from first base and sending the game to extra innings.
Providence attained the game winning hit in the top of the ninth inning. UConn continued to battle to the end putting the potential game tying run at third base and game winning run at second but could not find the big hit.

UConn will close out the series against Providence on Monday, April 1 at 3:00pm at Burrill Family Field in Storrs.
