STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team defeated the Providence Friars, 4-2 on Monday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The win secures the Huskies third conference series win of the season, moving to 7-2 in BIG EAST play.

Payton Kinney made her eleventh start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. She tossed a gem tossing 5.2 scoreless innings, only giving up three hits with six strikeouts.

UConn jumped out in front early off the bat of Grace Jenkins in the first inning. She smoked her fourth homer of the year to left center field, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

Hope Jenkins extended the Huskies lead to 4-0 in the third inning. The sophomore worked an impressive ten pitch at bat before singling to center field, scoring Lexi Hastings from third base and Grace Jenkins from second base.

Hope Jenkins came on in relief for Kinney in the sixth inning. She pitched one scoreless inning with a strikeout.

Providence made a late push in the seventh inning as the Friars jumped on UConn's closer Meghan O'Neil forcing the graduate senior to throw 33 pitches across only six batters. The Friars scored two runs to trim into the Huskies lead, 4-2. Kinney would come back in the circle for O'Neil to secure the final two outs on only four pitches, stranding the bases loaded.
