STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (15-17, 3-2 BIG EAST) fell to St. John's (23-6-1, 4-1 BIG EAST), 15-7, on a rainy, brisk Saturday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.
UConn took a 4-1 lead in the second inning after home runs from Korey Morton and Matt Malcom.
The Huskies were unable to keep the St. John's lineup down, allowing the Johnnies to score in seven of their nine at bats including the final five innings.
Luke Orbon hit a three run home run in the third inning and Jimmy Keenan smashed a go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth.
Trailing 6-4 in the fifth, the Huskies rallied with an RBI single from Luke Broadhurst to make it a one-run game.
After a wild pitch placed runners at second and third with one out, Matt Garbowski popped out to short for out number two.Â
St. John's opted to intentionally walk Matt Malcolm to load the bases for red hot Maddix Dalena. Dalena worked the count full but struck out looking to end the threat.
That was the closest the Huskies would get as St. John's scored 9 runs in the final four frames to even up the series.Â
The rubber game will be tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. in Storrs.Â
