STORRS, Conn. - Â The UConn women's field hockey team finished the weekend 2-0 after taking down in state rival Yale by a final of 3-2 Sunday afternoon. Sophie Perschk, Madi Herb and Sol Simone were the goal scorers for the Huskies, while sophomore Natalie McKenna continued to shine in goal, making six saves.
Yale jumped on the attack early, peppering Natalie McKenna with shots, but the sophomore goalkeeper stood strong, fending off the Bulldogs attack and keeping the game scoreless. After weathering the initial attack by Yale, UConn countered and on their first shot of the game, freshman Sophie Perschk found the back of the net to give UConn the 1-0 lead.
In the second quarter the Huskies doubled their lead as freshman Sophie Perschk passed the ball between her legs to senior Madi Herb in front of the net for the tip in goal. With the two-goal lead, UConn's defense would shine, continuing to hold the talented Yale offense scoreless in the first half.
Yale would not be kept scoreless for much longer as Poppy Beales, and the Bulldogs found the back of the net to open the third quarter and cut the UConn lead to one. UConn would respond two minutes later on a penalty corner as Sol Simone was in the right place at the right time to score the goal following a deflection off the stick of Madi Herb. Once again Yale would cut the UConn lead to one. Yale would pull their goalkeeper in hopes of finding the equalizing goal, but the Huskies defense buckled down to help UConn come away with the 3-2 victory.
UP NEXT: Â The Huskies will head back on the road, as they will travel to take on Georgetown University Friday Sept. 27 followed by a matchup against Delaware, Sept. 29. Both games are set to begin at noon.
