WASHINGTON, D.C- The UConn Women's field hockey improved to 2-0 in BIG EAST action as they shut out Georgetown 5-0. The Huskies defense shined, holding the Hoyas to two shots on goal, while the Huskies offense featured goals from, Madi Herb, Juul Sauer, Julia Bressler, and Milou Huecker.
From the first whistle, the Huskies jumped out on the attack, pressuring the Hoyas defense. The Huskies had multiple chances on penalty corners, but Georgetown's defense stepped up to the challenge. UConn eventually found the back of the net midway through the first quarter as senior Madi Herb was in front and after being denied once by the Georgetown goaltender, put back her own rebound to give UConn the 1-0 lead. With the one goal lead, the Huskies defense went to work and was able to hold the Hoyas scoreless to enter the quarter break with the 1-0 lead.
The second quarter was all UConn. Freshman Juul Sauer doubled the Huskies lead early, as she looped a shot over the Georgetown goaltender. The Huskies continued to their offensive success as junior Julia Bressler fired a shot on the penalty corner through the defense and into the goal. With the three-goal lead, UConn's defense shined, allowing just two total shots and one shot on goal which was saved by sophomore Natalie McKenna, and with that the Huskies entered the half with the three-goal lead.
The third quarter followed the trend of the previous two. The Huskies jumped out on the early attack and found the back of the net twice while holding the Georgetown offense scoreless. Freshman Juul Sauer extended the Huskies lead as she took the long pass from senior Sophia Ugo and one timed it home to give UConn the 4-0 lead. Later in the quarter, off a penalty corner, freshman Milou Huecker took the setup and fired the ball into the back of the net for her first career goal. UConn's defense continued to stifle Georgetown as they entered the final frame with the 5-0 lead.
With the five-goal lead, UConn's defense handled the rest as the Huskies would shutout the Hoyas for the 5-0 victory. UConn's defense held Georgetown to two total shots and one shot on goal through four quarters of action.
Up Next: The Huskies will wrap up their road trip Sunday as they travel to Delaware for a non-conference matchup. The game is set to begin at noon and can be streamed live on Flo Sports.
