NEWARK, DELAWARE – The UConn women's field hockey team finishes their road trip 2-0 as they take down the Delaware Blue Hens by a final of 2-1 in overtime, behind two goals from junior Julia Bressler.
The Huskies were tested defensively in the first quarter as Delaware had multiple rushes and opportunities to find the back of the net. After an early back and forth, UConn opened the scoring as junior Julia Bressler took the feed from Sol Simone and was able to beat the keeper for the first goal of the match. Delaware had a chance late in the first quarter to tie the game, as they were awarded a penalty stroke with a minute left, however sophomore Natalie McKenna denied the opportunity and the Huskies entered the break with the 1-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Delaware found the equalizer as they fired the ball from outside the circle that was eventually deflected past Natalie McKenna for the goal. Through two quarters, the Blue Hens were outshot the Huskies 8-4 in total shots, and 5-2 in shots on goal, but neither team was able to find another goal to take the lead, as they entered the half tied at 1.
In the third quarter, the Huskies had plenty of opportunities to take the lead as they had four penalty corners throughout the corner but were unable to convert. The best chance came on a penalty corner where Juul Sauer's shot hit the post and bounced wide. With neither team able to capitalize on chances, the teams entered the final frame tied at one.
In the fourth quarter, the Huskies found the back of the net following a penalty corner, however the goal by Madi Herb was waved off by the referee for illegal contact, so the teams remained knotted at one at the end of the fourth forcing a sudden death overtime. In overtime, the Huskies instantly jumped on the attack looking to find the game winner. Sol Simone took the ball and beat her defender looking to score the winner, but a Delaware foul halted play and the referees awarded a penalty stroke to the Huskies. Junior Julia Bressler stepped up and sunk the penalty stroke to give UConn the win and help the Huskies improve to 9-1 on the season.
UP NEXT: The Huskies will return home as they welcome Villanova to Storrs, Friday Oct. 4. The game is set to begin at 1pm and can be streamed live on Flo Sports.
