INDIANAPOLIS - The UConn women's soccer team (8-3-3, 4-1-2Â BIG EAST) captured a 2-0 road victory against the Butler Bulldogs (4-4-5, 1-3-2 BIG EAST) on Wednesday night at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl.Â
Senior Chioma Okafor scored her third goal in the last two matches to break a scoreless first half in the 26th minute. Redshirt freshman Se-Hanna Mars served a ball into the box that found Naia Ocio. The Bilbao, Spain native redirected the pass with a header to Okafor and the striker did the rest to notch her 32nd career goal.Â
Mars then sealed the game in the second half with her first career goal in the 83rd minute. Mars received the pass, stopped on a dime, cut to her right and served a ball past the keeper in the upper right corner of the goal.Â
The victory is the first for the Huskies at Butler (1-2-1) since the two teams started playing in the spring of 2021.Â
The shutout is the eighth of the season for the Huskies and is the BIG EAST leading seventh shutout for freshman goalkeeper Ava Yamas. Yamas needed to make just three saves with the help of her defense.Â
The win pushes the Huskies a step closer to clinching a spot in the four-team BIG EAST Championship with UConn currently in third place (14 points) with three matches remaining.Â
UConn will have a big test on Senior Night on Saturday, Oct. 18 with fourth-place Villanova coming to Storrs for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The game can be seen on ESPN+
