ERIE, Pa. – No. 8 UConn women's hockey skated to a 1-1 draw with the Mercyhurst Lakers on Friday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Both goals came on the power play sending the game to overtime, and eventually a shootout where the Huskies won, 2-0. The result moves the Huskies to 4-2-1 overall this season.
Mercyhurst opened the scoring on the power play five minutes into the first period, giving the Lakers an early lead. Despite multiple attempts from the UConn offense, Lakers netminder Magdalena Luggin made several saves, maintaining Mercyhurst's one-goal advantage into the intermission. Shots were even at 12 a-piece in the first period.
The second period saw a flurry of activity, but neither team managed to find the back of the net. UConn dominated the faceoff circle, consistently winning possession to maintain offensive pressure. Despite power play opportunities for both teams, strong defensive plays and goaltending kept the score unchanged. Shots favored the Huskies, 16-8 in the second period.
UConn's offensive pressure paid off forcing a penalty on Mercyhurst five minutes into the third period. Junior defender Maya Serdachny leveled the score at 1-1 with her first goal of the season. Both teams traded chances at a potential game-winner in regulation, but both netminders stood strong, forcing the game to go to overtime.
In overtime, each team had chances to win the game, but could not beat the goaltenders, ending the game officially in a tie, and sending the game to a shootout.
In the shootout, UConn goaltender Tia Chan stood tall, saving both shots she faced. Chan finished with 27 saves in the game. For UConn, Julia Pellerin and Claire Murdoch both had successful attempts, giving the Huskies the 2-0 win in the shootout.
