Huskies Defeat Friars Friday Afternoon

STORRS, Conn. — UConn women's field hockey secured a decisive 3-1 victory over Providence College with two goals in the fourth quarter on Friday afternoon.
The first quarter began with UConn establishing an early offensive presence. Sol Simone took a shot at 2:09, but it was saved by Providence's goalie, Ava Porter. Providence responded with a shot attempt by Florencia Talarico at 4:25, but it went wide of the goal. The quarter concluded with both teams holding firm defensively, keeping the score tied at 0-0.
The second quarter began with a series of aggressive offensive maneuvers by UConn. Despite several shots on goal, Providence goalkeeper Ava Porter made crucial saves, maintaining a tense scoreless tie. UConn's persistence paid off when Julia Bressler scored the first goal at 29:25, assisted by Milou Heuker and Simone, breaking through with a successful penalty corner execution. The quarter closed with UConn leading 1-0, setting the stage for a strong position moving forward.
The third quarter commenced with UConn maintaining a slender 1-0 lead over Providence. Early in the quarter, UConn faced a defensive challenge, with Providence's Lily Procaccianti attempting a high shot that went off target. UConn sought to extend their lead with a penalty corner executed by Simone at 35:06, although Violeta Francese's subsequent shot went wide.
UConn's defense remained firm as Natalie McKenna secured a critical save against a shot from Providence's Bo Martina following a penalty corner. UConn's offense responded with a shot by Abby Davidson that was saved by Providence's goalie, Porter. The quarter concluded without any changes to the score, as UConn held their 1-0 advantage.
UConn started the fourth quarter with momentum, capitalizing on a penalty corner at 46:59. Francese scored shortly after, increasing UConn's lead to 2-0 at 47:08. UConn maintained offensive pressure with a blocked shot by Bressler at 47:11.
As the quarter progressed, UConn continued to press with another penalty corner at 51:44. Although Providence had a brief response with a corner at 54:17, their shot attempt went wide. UConn extended their lead to 3-0 when Bressler converted a penalty stroke at 57:32.
Providence responded late in the quarter, scoring at 58:22 to bring the score to 3-1. Despite this, UConn held their advantage, ending the quarter with a 3-1 victory.
Julia Bressler scored two goals, including the game-winner, on four shots on goal. Milou Heuker recorded an assist while adding one shot. Violeta Francese tallied a goal with two shots, one of which was on target. Sol Simone contributed an assist and took one shot on goal.
The next challenge for the Huskies takes them to Amherst, where they will face Massachusetts on Sunday, October 5, at 1 p.m.
