STORRS, Conn. — The University of Connecticut men's ice hockey team and Harvard University skated to a 1-1 tie on Friday night. Tabor Heaslip scored the lone goal for the Huskies while Tyler Muszelik made 36 saves in net.
The first period began with UConn winning faceoffs, and putting pressure on the Harvard defense. The Huskies were able to take the lead midway through the first period, as Tristan Fraser tipped the puck to Tabor Heaslip who scored on the breakaway giving UConn a 1-0 lead. The Huskies penalty kill was forced onto the ice as a holding penalty gave Harvard the man advantage but UConn's defense held strong, with Tyler Muszelik making crucial saves, and the period concluded with UConn leading 1-0.
In the second period, UConn pressured Harvard's defense but was unable to convert their efforts into goals. Joey Muldowney and Ryan Tattle both had multiple attempts, including Tattle hitting the pipe, but Charette managed to deflect multiple shots. Muszelik stayed strong in net making key saves to deny Harvard's advances keeping the Huskies in front entering the third period.
In the third period, Harvard found the equalizer two minutes into the start of the period tying the game at 1. The Huskies looked prime to take the lead but an attempt at a goal was waved off as the officials deemed the goalies pad was pushed over the goal line, keeping the game tied at one. Despite several shot attempts and chances by both teams, neither team was able to find the game winning goal in regulation.
The overtime period began with UConn winning the faceoff and controlling the puck, but the Huskies attempts were denied by Harvard's netminder. The Crimson looked to counter but Tyler Muszelik held firm, making saves on all four shots faced in the overtime period. With the overtime period ending, the game officially ended in a tie, but both teams entered a shootout. The 10 round shootout was capped off by senior Huston Karpman scoring the winning goal, followed by a save by Muszelik.
UP NEXT: The Huskies will turn their attention to a matchup with Merrimack to close out the weekend. Puck drop is scheduled for 6pm at the Toscano Family Ice Forum.
