Huskies Defeated by St. John's on Friday Night

QUEENS, N.Y.—UConn women's volleyball (16-7, 5-6 BIG EAST) was defeated by the St. John's Red Storm (7-17, 3-8 BIG EAST) in four sets (25-15, 16-25, 17-25, 22-25) on Friday night in Queens.
The opening set was tightly contested, with the sides trading points to keep the score level at 6-6. Emma Werkmeister fired in an early kill to give the Huskies an 8-7 lead. Kills from Hanna Tylska and Jess Perry, and an ace from Maggie Carley pushed the UConn advantage to 16-9. Audrey Rome sent in a kill and Brenna Wyman poured in an ace to put the Huskies in control with a 21-11 lead. St. John's cut into the lead, but Tylska finished the frame to give UConn the 25-15 set victory.
The Red Storm got a strong start in the second set, taking a 9-2 lead early. UConn cut into the lead, capitalizing on a St. John's error and a booming kill from Perry to close the gap to 10-5. St. John's regained control in the frame to build the advantage back to 16-9. Werkmeister sent in a kill to cut the lead to 17-12, but the Red Storm took the second set 25-16 to even the match.
St. John's carried over its momentum, jumping in front 8-3 to cause an early UConn timeout. Werkmeister added another ace to close the margin to 8-5, but the Red Storm responded by constructing the lead back to 13-7. The hosts continued the intensity, with Erin Parker igniting the attack to put the Red Storm in front 17-8. Grace Maria poured in an ace, cutting the St. John's lead to six at 18-12. Ayva Cebollero turned away a St. John's attack with a block to bring the Huskies within two at 19-17. St. John's held off the rally to take the third set, 25-17.
Werkmeister dominated the service line with another ace and Jordyn Hughes fueled the UConn attack, pushing the Huskies in front 6-3. The visitors stayed in front, 13-11, thanks to another ace from Wyman. A tightly contested fourth frame saw the sides trade leads throughout, with the Huskies leveling the score at 17-17. After the Red Storm grabbed a 19-17 lead, UConn rattled off three straight points to go in front 20-19. However, St. John's answered, going on a 6-2 run down the stretch to take the set 25-22, defeating the Huskies in four sets.
Parker and Martina Ghezzi led the Red Storm with 15 kills each in the win. Werkmeister finished with a match-high 17 kills in the defeat for the Huskies.
The Huskies are back in action tomorrow afternoon against Seton Hall at 5:00 pm.
