STORRS, CT - UConn quarterback Joe Fagnano (Williamsport, PA) is the recipient of this week's New England Football Writers Association Gold Helmet Award presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation. It is the second weekly Gold Helmet award for Fagnano this season and he joins teammates Bryun Parham (Long Beach, CA) and wide receiver Skyler Bell (Bronx, NY) in taking home the honor this season.
Fagnano guided the Huskies to their ninth win on the season in an offensive shootout, 48-45 at Florida Atlantic on Saturday. Fagnano completed a career-high 33 of 46 passes for a career-best 446 yards and three touchdowns and led the game winning drive in the final 2:11 to help the Huskies close out their second nine-win season. It was the first time in program history that UConn has won nine games in back-to-back seasons. Fagnano threw first quarter touchdown passes of 24 yards to John Neider, 56-yards to Shamar Porter and 32-yards to Alex Honig. With the Huskies down 45-41, Fagnano orchestrated a 15-play drive to cover 75 yards with running back Cam Edwards plunging in from a yard out with 0:26 left for the go-ahead score. It was the third time this season UConn took a lead to win in the final two minutes of a game (Buffalo, Duke, Florida Atlantic). Fagnano became the first UConn QB to start every game of a season for the first time since the 2018 season (David Pindell).
The Husky signal caller and the rest of the Huskies will await their bowl selection on December 7 to learn where they will put the finishing touches on the 2025 season.
