UConn is on the road for the second-straight week as they take on the Delaware Blue Hens Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium. The is will be the first match-up between the two schools as FBS members. Kick-off is slated for 3 pm on ESPN+.
The Huskies and Blue Hens are familiar foes who haven't faced-off since the 1998 season when both schools competed at the FCS level. This will mark the 28th all-time meeting between the two schools with Delaware holding a 20-7 lead. This is Delaware's first season at the FBS level and as a member of Conference-USA. Saturday's game marks the first of two match-ups against C-USA this season for the Huskies with the FIU Panthers coming to Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field on October 4.
UConn is looking to bounce back from a 27-20 overtime loss at Syracuse last weekend. The Huskies held a 17-6 lead in the fourth quarter but drives of 90 and 80 yards to take a 20-17 lead with 0:48 seconds left in the game. UConn responded and quarterback Joe Fagnano moved the Huskies into field position for Chris Freeman to bury a 41-yard field goal to send the game to overtime. The Orange put the ball in the endzone on the opening possession and their defense held up on a fourth-and-goal from four-yard line to seal the win. Skyler Bell continued his blazing start to the season, pulling down a career-high 11 catches for 105 yards in the loss.
The NFL season got underway this past weekend with nine former Huskies represented in the league. Last year's draft pick, tackle Chase Lundt (2021-24) joins former UConn offensive lineman Ryan Van Denmark (2017-21) with the Buffalo Bills. Also on opening day rosters was defensive tackle Folorunso Fatukasi (2014-17) with the Houston Texans, defensive tackle Travis Jones (2018-21) with the Baltimore Ravens, offensive lineman Matt Peart (2016-19) with the Denver Broncos, and running back Nate Carter (2021-22) with the Atlanta Falcons. Former offensive linemen Christian Haynes (2018-23), Seattle Seahawks, and Valentin Senn (2021-24), Arizona Cardinals, open the year on the IR. Former defensive end Eric Watts (2019-23) is a member of the New York Jets practice squad.
Last Meeting vs. Delaware...
Nov. 7, 1998 - Delaware 59 UConn 17 - Storrs, CT
The last match-up between the Huskies and Blue Hens took place during the 1998 season when the two schools were members of FCS (formerly NCAA I-AA) and part of the Atlantic-10 conference. Delaware paid a visit to Memorial Stadium in Storrs and dealt the Huskies the most lopsided loss in the all-time series between the two schools, a 59-17 defeat. The Blue Hens offense set school records with 584 passing yards and 732 total yards in the game, including a historic performance by receiver Eddie Conti. The wideout finished with 15 catches for 354 yards. Quarterback Matt Nagy threw for a school record 556 yards as well. After trailing 14-0, UConn battled their way back into the game and cut it 24-17 at the beginning of the third quarter. from there, it was all Delaware as the Blue Hens rattled off five unanswered touchdowns the rest of the way. For UConn, running back Barry Chandler ran it 16 times for 61 yards and had both touchdowns in the loss. Wideout Tory Taylor caught seven passes for 102 yards.
Scouting the Blue Hens... The Delaware Blue Hens are in the midst of a new era for the football program as they competing in their first season at the FBS level and as the newest member of Conference-USA. The Blue Hens opened the 2025 season with a 35-17 win over Delaware State home and are coming off a 31-7 loss at Colorado last weekend. Returning starting quarterback Nick Minicucci has completed 63.9 percent of his passes for 582 yards and four scores through the first two games. On the receiving end, Jake Thaw has 11 catches for 177 yards and a score. The Blue Hens have thrown the ball well through the opening two games, averaging 301.5 yards per game. Running back Jo Silver, a 2025 Doak Walker Award watch list candidate, is averaging 4.8 yards per rush in the early going. On defense, linebacker Dillon Trainer has 16 tackles, 2.5 for a loss including 1.5 sacks.
UConn vs. Conference-USA... The Huskies are 1-4 against teams currently in Conference-USA. UConn is 1-1 against FIU and is 0-3 against Middle Tennessee. UConn has two games against the league this season, facing Delaware and FIU. They have future games against the league in 2027, at FIU and Liberty and home against Delaware. The Huskies faced past members of the league during their stints in Conference-USA. The Huskies faced Cincinnati (0-1), FAU (1-0), Louisville (0-1), Marshall (0-1) and USF (0-2) when they were members of the league.
