STORRS, Conn. – UConn volleyball is set for a busy weekend, traveling to Yale and Fairfield before concluding with a home match against Northeastern at the UConn Volleyball Center.
UConn Huskies (6-0):
The Huskies continued their hot start to the season last weekend and swept the Top Dogs Classic in Storrs. UConn defeated South Dakota, Ball State, and Colgate in three straight matches, each decided in four sets. Three Huskies were named to the all-tournament team, led by senior outside hitter Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.). Werkmeister was named tournament MVP after averaging 4.33 kills per set, highlighted by a 21-kill performance in the win over Colgate.
McKenna Brand (Lucas, TX) won BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week earlier this week. Brand averaged 4.92 digs per set during the three UConn victories. Brand and Doga Kutlu (Ankara, Turkey) joined Werkmeister on the all-tournament team. Kutlu led UConn's offense with 9.33 assists per set and also averaged 3.08 digs per set. Grace Maria (Arlington, Va.) continued her strong season, posting a new career-high 13 kills against Colgate.
Scouting the Opposition
First, UConn travels to New Haven on Friday night to face Yale at 7:00 pm (0-3). Yale has won three straight Ivy League Championships and is predicted to win a fourth in 2025. The Bulldogs return all-Ivy selection Betsy Goodenow, who led the team with 355 kills (3.59/set) in 2024. Goodenow, Laurece Abraham, Gigi Barr and Arya Jue earned preseason all-Ivy recognition.
Next, the Huskies continue their weekend on Saturday afternoon against Fairfield (4-2) at 4:00 pm. Fairfield, picked to win a third straight conference title in the preseason poll, received seven first-place votes. Three Stags—Allie Elliott, Mamie Krubally, and Maya Walker—were named to the preseason all-MAAC team. Krubally leads the Stags with 73 kills on the season (2.81 kills/set). The Stags swept Yale on September 10th, taking down the Bulldogs after hitting .383 as a team in the victory.
UConn will return home Sunday afternoon to host Northeastern (4-2) at the UConn Volleyball Center. Northeastern was projected to finish 7th in the CAA preseason poll. Redshirt freshman Valentina Meirelles was named a CAA preseason honorable mention for Northeastern. Meirelles leads the Huskies with 2.76 kills/set, with a season-high 16 kills in a win over New Haven.
