Volleyball Sweeps Northeastern in Battle of the Huskies

STORRS, Conn. — UConn volleyball swept Northeastern (25-21, 25-22, 25-21) on Sunday at the UConn Volleyball Center to move to 8-1 on the season.
The first set began with Northeastern taking an early lead, but UConn responded with pivotal plays that shifted the momentum. Grace Maria (Arlington, Va) was productive on both ends for the Huskies, chipping in multiple kills, to help UConn tie the score at 15-15. Defensivley, Loren Winn (Dallas, TX) and Eli Adams (Clarkston, MI) shined for UConn, anchoring the home team with multiple blocks in the first frame. Doga Kutlu (Ankara, Turkey) was key in leading the UConn offense, pouring in assists and kills down the stretch. A late ace from McKenna Brand (Lucas, TX) extended the lead, and a decisive block by Maria sealed the set with a 25-21 victory for UConn.
Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.) got the host Huskies on the board first in the second frame, firing in the first two kills for UConn. Despite an early surge by Northeastern, highlighted by Valentina Meirelles' consecutive kills, UConn responded with a critical 4-0 run, including pivotal kills by Audrey Rome (Sandwich, IL). With the score tied at 10, UConn regained momentum as Kutlu delivered a service ace and contributed to a series of kills, pushing the lead to 18-14. In her first collegiate action, Jordyn Hughes (Portage, Mi) shined for the Huskies, with her first two kills in a UConn uniform. Hughes also stepped up on the defensive end for the Huskies, with her first career block to seal the set for UConn, 25-22.
In the third set, Northeastern and UConn traded points to open the frame, with Svenja Rodenbuesch putting the visitors in front 10-8. Perry and Rome pushed UConn ahead, each chipping in kills to bring UConn level at 13-13. Werkmeister and Northeastern's Gabby Reeves traded aces, keeping the set tied at 15-15. After falling behind 18-16, Maria and Perry stepped up for the Huskies, firing in kills to tie the score at 20-20. UConn's defense was the difference down the stretch in the third, as Perry and Rome ignited the crowd with monster blocks, lifting UConn to a straight-set victory.
Werkmeister led the Huskies with nine kills and seven digs. Rome made a strong defensive impact with five blocks, contributing significantly to UConn's 13 blocks as a team. Kutlu delivered 24 assists and added seven kills. Maria added eight kills, six digs, and four blocks. Hughes had four kills and two blocks in her UConn debut.
