Volleyball Concludes Nonconference Play This Weekend

STORRS, Conn-- UConn volleyball wraps up nonconference play this weekend by hosting Brown, Marist, and Sacred Heart in the UConn Classic in Storrs.
The Huskies suffered their first loss of the season last Friday night against Yale, falling in five sets to the Bulldogs in New Haven. UConn bounced back with wins over Fairfield and Northeastern, taking care of the visiting Huskies in straight sets at the UConn Volleyball Center.
After their weekend performances, Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.) and Audrey Rome (Sandwich, IL) were named to the Yale-Fairfield Invite All-Tournament Team. Werkmeister led the Huskies with 39 kills (3.00/set), adding 25 digs (1.92/set) and eight aces. Rome notched a career-high 14 kills in UConn's five-set win over Fairfield.
Scouting the Opposition:
UConn will face Brown on Friday at 6:00 pm. Brown enters the weekend with a 3-3 record in 2025. The Bears defeated UCF in the final match of the UCF Tournament in Orlando last weekend. Maria Sidorova led Brown in attack with 13 kills. Sidorova leads Brown with 67 kills (3.19 per set) for the season. Jessie Golden is the defensive anchor for the Bears, averaging 4.48 digs per set in 2025. Golden is the two-time defending Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year. Julia Kakkis directs the offense for the Bears, averaging 9.10 assists per set. UConn leads the all-time season series between the teams 21-9, sweeping the Bears in their last matchup on September 20th, 2024.
The Huskies will take on Marist on Saturday at 4:00 pm. The Red Foxes come to Storrs looking to bounce back after dropping their last four matches. Junior outside hitter Sara Dasic is the kill leader for the Red Foxes, averaging 2.78 kills per set. Caelyn Dumas conducts the Marist offense, averaging 7.72 assists/set in her freshman season. UConn won the first and only matchup between the teams on September 30, 1988, sweeping Marist in straight sets.
Sacred Heart will be UConn's final opponent on Sunday at 3:00 pm. The Pioneers come to Storrs with a 3-7 record this season. Sacred Heart comes to Storrs after defeating CCSU in five sets on Wednesday night, chipping in 13 aces as a team to pick up the victory. Last weekend, SHU went 1-2 at the Lehigh Invitational, defeating NJIT in the tournament finale. The Pioneers received multiple honors in the MAAC Weekly Awards this week. Miliani Villarreal was named MAAC Libero of the Week after leading the Pioneers with 4.09 digs per set and 0.64 aces per set. Ava Roodbol was named Setter of the Week for the second time this season, averaging 9.64 assists per set. UConn leads the all-time series 5-1, sweeping the Pioneers in Storrs last season on September 1, 2024.Â
