Quick Hits…
The UConn Huskies return home to take on the Ball State Cardinals at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field Saturday at 3:30 pm on CBS Sports Network.
Saturday's game is the fifth all-time match-up between the Huskies and Cardinals, with Ball State having won all four previous match-ups. The two schools last met in 2022, a 25-21 win for Ball State at home. This will be the first of two-straight games against teams from the Mid-American Conference with a trip up to Buffalo slated for next week. UConn is 21-11 all-time against MAC teams and 1-1 under head coach Jim Mora.
After a season-opening win at home over Central Connecticut, the Huskies have lost two-straight on the road, both in overtime. UConn is coming off a 44-41 loss to Delaware last Saturday where the Blue Hens tied the game on a field goal as time expired to force overtime. The Huskies took the ball first in the extra session and put up a Chris Freeman field goal. UD quarterback Nick Minicucci secured the win for the Blue Hens with a 13-yard burst up the middle for the game-winning TD, his third rushing score of the game. The two teams combined for over 1,000 yards of total offense on the afternoon. UConn had 521 yards, 175 on the ground and 346 through the air.
UConn got 116 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Cam Edwards in the loss at Delaware, his second 100-yard effort in three games this season. Quarterback Joe Fagnano tied his career-high with 28 completions and threw for 346 yards, his highest total as a Husky. Wide receiver Skyler Bell caught seven passes and came up just short of his third-straight 100-yard game to start the season, finishing with 92 yards.
Last Meeting vs. Ball State...
Oct. 15, 2022 - Ball State 25 UConn 21 - Muncie, IN
The Huskies saw a 21-10 lead at Ball State erased on the way to a 25-21 loss to the Cardinals during the 2022 season The Huskies were held scoreless in the second half as Ball State's offense was fueled by running back Carson Steele who had 133 of his 179 yards in the third and fourth quarters to lead the comeback. Steele scored his third touchdown of the day with 2:40 left in the fourth quarter to give the Cardinals their first lead en route to ending UConn's two-game win streak. The Husky offense ran the ball well, putting up 194 yards on the ground at Ball State. Fullback Robert Burns finished with 71 yards rushing on 11 carries, both new career-highs, while scoring his first career touchdown. Freshman back Victor Rosa had 72 yards on 17 carries.
Scouting the Cardinals... The Ball State Cardinals picked up their first win of the 2025 season last weekend, topping FCS opponent New Hampshire, 34-29, in their home opener. The Cardinals, under first year head coach Mike Uremovich, opened the season falling at Purdue, 31-0, and at Auburn, 42-3. The Cardinals have run the ball well in the early going, coming in averaging 140.3 yards per game with the duo of running back Qua Ashley and quarterback Kiael Kelly leading the way. Kelly has thrown for 263 total yards with Ball State throwing it just 47 times over the first three games. A pair of former Huskies have been major contributors on the Ball State defense in linebacker Alfred Chea and defensive end Nathan Voorhis. Chea, who played for UConn from 2020-24, has a share of the team lead with 13 tackles, 1.5 for a loss. Voorhis, a Husky in 2022 and 2023, has 5.0 tackles for a loss and a team-best 3.5 sacks this season.
