The UConn Huskies head back out on the road this week to take on the University at Buffalo Bulls Saturday afternoon on ESPN+.
The Huskies will face a Mid-American opponent for the second-consecutive week after dealing Ball State a 31-25 loss last Saturday at home. UConn is 22-11 all-time against MAC teams and 2-1 under head coach Jim Mora. This will be the 23rd all-time meeting between the Huskies and the Bulls. UConn is 10-2 against Buffalo in their 12 meetings at the FBS level including a 47-3 win over the Bulls last fall.
The Huskies bounced back from a pair of overtime losses to post a 31-25 win over Ball State and improved to 2-0 at home at Pratt &Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field this season. The Huskies snapped an 0-4 streak against the Cardinals as their offense continued to shine early on this season. UConn ran for 219 yards and threw for 181 in the win.
UConn got career performances from a pair of offensive stars in running back Cam Edwards and wide receiver Skyler Bell. Edwards churned out a career-high 194 yards and two fourth quarter touchdown runs in the win, marking his third 100-yard effort this season. His 194 yards rushing was the most by a UConn running back since the 2010 season when Jordan Todman had 222 yards against Pitt. It was the highest rushing total by a Husky since quarterback David Pindell had 197 yards rushing against USF in 2018. Bell hauled in a career-high 14 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. It was his second game this season pulling down 10 or more passes in a game.
Last Meeting vs. Buffalo... September 28, 2024 - UConn 47 Buffalo 3 - East Hartford, CT
UConn wideout Skyler Bell hauled in six passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Huskies to a 47-3 win over the University at Buffalo at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field. The UConn offense ran for 257 yards and passed for 280, while the defense was equally impressive, allowing a season-low three points and 198 total yards in the win. For Bell, his three touchdown grabs set a new school UConn FBS record and marked the first Husky to catch three touchdowns in a game since the 1996 season (Dak Newton 3 vs. Villanova). Defensively, the Huskies recorded three sacks and grabbed an interception while holding Buffalo to just 12 first downs, 1-of-14 on third down while forcing eight three-and-outs. Linebacker Langston Hardy had a pair of sacks and fellow linebacker Tui Faumuina-Brown had the other as well as six tackles. UConn's starter Nick Evers was forced from the game in the second quarter with an injury leaving back-up Nick Fagnano to take over play-calling duties. Fagnano finished 11-of-19 for 217 yards and three touchdowns in relief, all three to Bell. UConn kicker Chris Freeman connected on field goals of 26, 39, 22 and 27 yards, tying the UConn school and FBS record for field goals in a game. His 4-for-4 effort marks the first time a UConn kicker had four makes since Dave Teggart did it at Cincinnati in 2011.
Scouting the Bulls... Buffalo is back at home this weekend after a tough 21-17 loss last Saturday to visiting Troy. The Bulls shutout the Trojans for three quarters but Troy found the endzone three times in the final frame including the game-winning score with 45 seconds left. Buffalo is 2-2 on the season with a win over Saint Francis on their ledger and a win at Kent State in their MAC opener. On offense, the Bulls have a pair of former Huskies in their line-up in quarterback Ta'quan Roberson and wide receiver Jasaiah Gathings. Roberson has started all four games and completed 59-of-95 passes for 662 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions. He has also been effective on the ground, rushing for 174 yards and two scores, averaging 5.0 yards per carry. Victor Snow has caught 16 passes for 206 yards and three scores to lead the wide receiver group. Gathings has chipped in 11 catches for 107 yards. On the ground, Al-Jay Henderson is the lead back with 72 carries for 274 yards and four scores. On defense, linebacker Red Murdock has made 44 tackles and is ninth in the country averaging 11.0 tackles per game. The Bulls can also rush the passer with 16.0 sacks as a team this season, tops in the country at 4.0 per game.
UConn vs. the Mid-American Conference... The Huskies are 22-11 all-time against teams in the MAC and have two games against the conference this season. The Huskies have faced Buffalo more than any other team in the league, posting an 11-2 mark against the Bulls since 1999 when they joined the MAC. UConn is 3-0 against Akron, 2-0 vs. Ohio, 1-0 vs. Toledo, 2-2 vs. Kent State, 1-1 vs. Eastern Michigan, 1-2 vs. Western Michigan, and 0-4 vs. Ball State.
